Founded in 1050 by Herluin de Conteville, husband of Arlette, “widow” of Duke Robert the Magnificent and mother of William the Conqueror, Grestain Abbey is nestled in the heart of a wooded park, crossed by a stream with beneficial waters .
Today, the park of the old abbey is the burial place of Arlette, Herluin and several members of the ducal family. And today only a few buildings remain, including the chapel and the abbot’s home.
