The life of a jazz musician is always closely linked to the sound of the group, but also to moments of solitude.
“Solo(s)” illustrate those moments of grace when Shabaka Hutchings stands alone before his audience. When Fred Hersch seems to speak to his piano, Michel Portal hides in the corners of a theatre to warm up his bass clarinet and chase away stage fright.
“Solo(s)” is also the ecstasy of Abdullah Miniawy (Le Cri du Caire) while listening to a solo by Peter Corser. “Solo(s)” is a short history of jazz that seeks to reveal how the intensity of each musician’s emotions gives body and soul to the sound of the group.
Jazz has been part of Hervé Escario’s daily life since the age of 12, when he happened to put an Archie Shepp vinyl on a turntable. His second artistic revelation came with the discovery of the photographs of Josef Koudelka, Roy DeCarava and Marc Riboud. Black-and-white photography of jazz musicians, as well as circus performers and dancers, then became an obvious path for him.
Winner of the 1st prize at the Jazz World Photo in 2023 and 2025, Hervé Escario regularly works with jazz musicians (Émile Parisien, Henri Texier, Yoann Loustalot, Sylvain Rifflet, among others) for album and press photography, and collaborates with numerous festivals (Tourcoing Jazz, Brussels Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac, Jazz en Nord, etc.).
